There's an entire episode of one of my favorite TV shows, You're the Worst, (by the way, the show is quite explicit and not for everyone) where Gretchen has such severe anxiety about her only household chore--opening the mail. Her therapist assigns her this task, and when she finally sits down to do the job, feeling proud of herself and what she accomplished, she opens a letter containing news of a loved-one's death, confirming to her forever that nothing good can come from the mail. This was very much a "funny because it's true" episode. I have definitely stared at a pile of mail in my early adulting years and realized that no good could come from it. People needed money, people wanted to con me into giving them my money, I forgot to give them my money and they were going to shut off my power, and they were getting married in a destination ceremony and could I afford the roughly $800 it was going to cost for travel, lodging, and gift? Christmas and my birthday were really the only time I looked forward to mail, because it was used for actually connecting with people. But even then, the papers resulting from mail would pile up and stress me out, no matter how many well-wishes were contained within the pile. After years of struggling with major mail purge systems, I finally realized that mail falls into three categories. That's it! It's simple. Three categories is TOTALLY manageable! And so I started managing it. Mail Category 1: Items to Dispose OfUnless you're an extreme coupon-er, those multi-page ads can go straight to the bin. Credit card offers? Straight to the bin--you're better off doing your own research and applications. Whether you shred it, recycle it, or trash it, if you don't have purpose for it to be kept, DO NOT PUT IT DOWN IN YOUR HOME. Take it straight to the bin and dispose of it. Mail Category 2: Action ItemsAction items are the ones that typically stress us out--we see a bill that needs to be paid, or an invitation that needs to be replied to, and then we have to remember to do it. Start by taking all of these papers out of their envelopes and disposing of the envelopes--UNLESS it has a return address you need to update in your records. Still take the paper out, but put that envelope in your Action Pile along with the flattened, unfolded bills and invitations. The next step with the Action Pile is to sort it according to urgency. The most urgent actions go on top--think the bills that have consequences if you forget to pay them. The least urgent actions go on the bottom--like that address you need to update. Put the organized pile next to your computer or in the place where you will take action on these items and work on the most urgent items every day until the pile is gone. Mail Category 3: Items to FileDid you recently get your car title mailed to you and see something like, "Please put with your records" plastered across the top of the cover page? You need to keep this paper. You also need to keep updated insurance policies, medical records, legal documents, or school records in a filing system. Does that mean that you're going to file everything as soon as it comes in? Maybe, but likely not. My files are locked in a fireproof safe, so I tend to file all of my documents that need filing weekly. They come in, I take them out of the envelope, unfold them, and put them in my To File Pile. For me, this pile lives next to my printer in an orderly fashion until my weekly filing session while watching an episode of Workin' Moms on Netflix. Fun fact? It never takes me more than 5 minutes once I sit down to just do it. If you don't have a filing system yet, just start with the pile. If you do? Go one step further and file these papers at least weekly to keep them safe for when you need them. And that's it, friends. Three categories of mail. Items to dispose of, action items, and items to file. If you start this sorting practice daily, as soon as you bring your mail in, you will end up able to find what you need, when you need it!

So many of us have been cooped up in our homes for the past two years. Because of that breadth of time, it can be so easy to say, "I should have already done this" or "If I didn't do it yet, it's probably never going to get done." But here's a fact: the way we have experienced our homes for the past two years is different than ever before. To expect for all of your previous systems to work for the new way we live our lives? It doesn't add up, friend, and that's okay! It's highly likely that you have a few pain points that could use a little love, and I'm here to help! In this post, you'll hear 5 Organizing Goals to consider for 2022 for a more organized you. Pick one or all five, but take a moment to think about how these goals could serve YOU in the upcoming year! Resolution #1: |
I’m Anna, founder of Rare Earth Mercantile! Through a variety of influences, my upbringing instilled a strong love for the natural world as well as a passion for aesthetic beauty. After getting married in 2018, I left the corporate HR world in order to travel with my husband. Over the last several years we’ve had many great adventures across the globe. As much as I love our travels, I quickly discovered that I needed to return to work, but knew that I wasn’t really interested in returning to the corporate HR. For the first time in my life I found myself strongly drawn to the creative world. What started off as a small hobby on Etsy, selling handmade natural décor, quickly grew into an idea for something much bigger. Realizing that these two things could be a perfect partnership as well as a viable business was really the defining moment for me. It has been an amazing journey so far! There is nothing more challenging or rewarding than starting your own business, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! |
Tell me about how you fell in love with natural treasures!
I’ve always had a love for the natural world. My husband is the same and has a special interest in rocks and fossils. While he is more of a collector, I come at this from a different angle. I see these pieces as natural art, many of which have found a place in our home. Others appreciate these beautiful treasures and sharing them has become the foundation of Rare Earth Mercantile.
You offer curated rocks, fossils, and other natural pieces through Rare Earth Mercantile. How do you incorporate these items into your own home?
As these pieces have tremendous aesthetic appeal, we have actually incorporated many of these natural works of art into the décor in our home. One of the first things you see when you come into our house is a reclaimed wood display showcasing some of our favorite ancient treasures, including ammonites, fossilized mammoth tusks, and many unusual rock and mineral specimens. Our main living area is also a showcase for many of our favorite finds, with lots of natural wood, fossil specimens, plants and natural light.
What is an unexpected consideration you’ve had to while transporting or storing an item?
Well, as far as an unexpected consideration, I think the most recent buying trip would certainly be one of the more memorable ones! My husband and I both were planning to attend the Denver rock and fossil show back in September. This is one of the largest shows in the US and it was a critical buying trip for us as I had just launched my site, and we had plans to meet with some of our established Moroccan vendors. A few days before we were scheduled to leave, I tested positive with a breakthrough case of Covid (asymptomatic, fortunately), and was obviously unable to travel to attend the show. My precious husband hopped on a plane and went to the show in Denver and did all of our buying with feedback from me via facetime. He did such an amazing job!
How do you categorize the items in your care while transitioning them from acquisition to homing them with a customer? By function? By material? By size? I’m so curious!
This can be kind of challenging at times because many of these pieces can be categorized in multiple ways, including origin, material, purpose, etc. Items are typically categorized by material (i.e., agate, petrified wood), and then further categorized by function, sub-type, shape, or other defining characteristic.
If you had a customer who is interested in incorporating more natural materials but is short on display space or storage, what pieces would you guide them toward?
I have several products that I consider to be functional art that are perfect for someone who is short on space! The petrified wood pieces are great because they can be used as a serving platter and when not in use they look beautiful on display on your kitchen countertop, or even on a mantle or shelf. Pieces like the zebra onyx coasters are also great because they look beautiful sitting on your coffee or end table, but also protect your furniture. A framed piece of agate is also a great way to add some natural décor to a small space!
Thank you so much, Anna, for the insight into all things natural wonder!

Lisa! Tell me about Scissortail Digital!
Scissortail Digital provides professional photo organizing, digitizing, and design services with the mission of helping people tell their stories, build their skills, and enjoy their photos. Photography is a fantastic medium for storytelling and connection and I believe that at the end of the day, our stories and memories matter most. They represent our connections and relationships, our priorities and lived experiences. Our stories help define us, connect us, and provide insight into who we are, for our own understanding and our relationships with those around us. I love this quote by American photographer and educator Ralph Hattersley, “We are making photographs to understand what our lives mean to us.”
Living in Oklahoma, we’re quite familiar with the threat of tornadoes and we’ve all heard the tragic stories of those who have lost everything in mere moments. Most people, when faced with potential disaster, would race to save their photos if forced to prioritize which physical possessions they could secure. While I’d never wish that fear of loss or actual loss on anyone, wouldn’t it be great if you knew for certain that all your photos and videos - your STORIES - were safe and retrievable even if the worst happened and your home and possessions were lost? In a nutshell, that’s exactly what I do - I work with clients worldwide to ensure that their memories are backed up, secure, accessible, and retrievable. No more frantically deleting photos on your phone so you have more space, no more worrying about your photos during storm season, just assurance that all your photos are safe in a system designed to meet your needs and preferences.
In addition to digital photo management, I offer photo scanning and video conversion services, as well as design projects including custom photo books and gallery walls. While I am also a photographer myself, my services typically begin when someone else has clicked the camera shutter. As an educator-turned-entrepreneur, I often say that I’m still teaching, but my content has shifted and I now have a much larger classroom - it’s worldwide. My goals are to always help people improve their skills and to use and enjoy their photos!

October kicks off my favorite season of cooking: holidays! I love to make yummy soups, baked casseroles, and I even make cookies twice over the next few months (that’s a lot of investment in a baked good for me). But it’s really frustrating to be in the midst of a fast-paced recipe and constantly losing your pace or track of what you’ve already added in because you can’t find the freaking spatula you want. We’ve all been there! But that moment is a beacon signaling:
It’s time to organize your kitchen!

I am a huge advocate of gifting experiences over stuff (unless that stuff has received more than a few hints and will be remarkably well used--*ahem* Harry Potter boxed set *ahem*). Tickets to a concert, family memberships to local attractions, and that pottery class down the street are wonderful ways to celebrate your loved ones! But what about for those loved ones who do all the things? You know them. They’re so strong and hardworking—and they would love to be seen and supported more than anything this holiday season. The answer?
Gift them professional organizing services!
