October kicks off my favorite season of cooking: holidays! I love to make yummy soups, baked casseroles, and I even make cookies twice over the next few months (that’s a lot of investment in a baked good for me). But it’s really frustrating to be in the midst of a fast-paced recipe and constantly losing your pace or track of what you’ve already added in because you can’t find the freaking spatula you want. We’ve all been there! But that moment is a beacon signaling:
It’s time to organize your kitchen!
Keep reading for 5 reasons now is the perfect time to organize your kitchen:
Reason #1: Reduce Time Cleaning
The more stuff you have, the more time you must spend managing that stuff. Once during a move, where I had a short-term rental and only unpacked the absolute necessities, I only allowed myself access to one day’s worth of dishes and flatware. Because I had limited access, I was able to spend less time on the task which enabled me to develop exceptional cleaning habits that I carry with me today. The simple kitchen can be an absolute gift during the holidays, when most people think of excess and extravagance. Getting rid of pieces and tools that you don’t actually use and organizing the things you do will allow you to develop those automated cleaning routines and reduce the time on the daily task.
Reason #2: Find What You Want
You had the gingerbread man cookie cutter. You absolutely know it. But he is nowhere to be found. When we store seasonal items, they can get buried under clutter. By taking time to organize your kitchen before the busy holiday season, you refresh your memory of where your items are and perhaps even rotate out seasonal cooking items (think grilling utensils for baking supplies). You can then make what you’ll need for the season easier to find.
Reason #3: Know What You Need
Additionally, you might realize that you loaned your sister that one dish you were counting on and never received it back! By organizing now, you can assess the gaps in your kitchen tools and shop before the stores are packed and or shipments risk late arrival. Keep a list on your phone as you’re going through the organizing process of tools you’d like to have going into the holidays.
Reason #4: Make Space for Mess
That’s right! I’m a professional organizer encouraging you to make a mess this holiday season. Active mess means a life well lived. It becomes overwhelming, though, if cleanup is less than easy. By organizing now, you’ll be able to clean up after cookie baking and have a place for all the tools before you even crack open the flour canister. Make space for mess and prepare your space for cleanup so you don’t leave the mess longer than you intend and ruin a beautiful memory with the guilt of not cleaning up after.
Reason #5: Help Guests Feel at Home
Have you ever visited someone’s home and just wanted a dang cup of water in the middle of the night and didn’t feel equipped to hunt down a glass? Spending a little time now organizing your kitchen can help you be intentional about placing items guests would use in accessible spaces. Small changes such as putting the K cups in the drawer below the Keurig can make your guests feel more at ease and like they don’t have to dig through all your stuff to be comfortable.

P.S. These three questions for staying organized at Halloween can be applied to all of the upcoming holidays, too!
