You’ve worked so hard to get your space organized how you want it! Or maybe you’ve even invested in professional organizing services, like our Complete SORT, to get your space how you’d like. You’re staring at it with your cup of coffee, so pleased at how it looks…. fearing the moment it all collapses.
It doesn’t have to!
The biggest battle of organization isn’t getting organized—it’s maintaining. Theoretically we’ve put organizational systems in place that make maintenance simple. But life is fluid! Things change! Your kiddos grow, you get a dog, you switch to working from home. All of these things require different functions of your space and can throw you for a maintenance loop.
Here are five simple tips to help you maintain your organized spaces!
1. Don’t put it down, put it away
This mantra will change the life of anyone who does not already hold it. Tidiness is the natural predecessor to organization, and repeating this phrase when you have anything in your hands will help keep your space organized. With organization, we have given every item a home. Keeping it tidy helps you to acknowledge when new items need a home, when you’re using items infrequently, and when you need to adjust an organizational system to make it easier to put a frequently used item away.
2. Get the entire family on board
While I have actually said, “Labels are quiet contracts between housemates,” you can’t simply label everything in a home and expect everyone to abide by the words on the bins. There will most likely be a level of education that the person who contracted organizing services or organizer has to do with all housemates. Listen to the needs of the people in your home but also set your expectations of how the organization will be maintained.
3. Schedule in routine audits
I do seasonal audits of my home and it has transformed my organization. Instead of a solid burst of productivity at the beginning of the calendar year and then letting everything fall to ruin for twelve whole months, set times to assess what is working and what isn’t. Prioritize what needs to happen and execute your plan. As much as we want to be perfect the first time around, our lives and our needs typically change. Check where you need to love on your space a little more with increased frequency to maintain your space.
4. Clean your space consistently
I actually love the experience and meditation of cleaning my home. There are phases of life where I’m able to be more consistent to a routine—and there are phases where I’m not. Post-busy phase, where I haven’t cleaned as often, is typically when I notice if my organization systems are functioning the way I want. If I have to spend the first hour of my cleaning session tidying my space, then I’m going to be too exhausted to scrub a shower. If my systems are working, I can easily clean. It’s a simple assessment that allows me to maintain my organizational systems by noticing what’s working.
5. Recognize your seasons
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I believe deeply in showing ourselves grace when we’re in busy seasons. If you have kiddos, these seasons will likely follow the school year. If you’re working in an event industry, you’ll have seasons of back to back events and slower periods. Recognizing the currency of time that you’re able to spend on maintaining and assessing organization is critical for breaking away from any shame of imperfection and allowing you to determine how to get yourself back to the organized state you want to be in! This could mean accepting your space until you have more time to devote to it or asking for help when you need it. Did you hear that? Ask for help when you need it.
