So much of our Instagram feeds has been beige for years on end and I’m TIRED of it! Color is such a wonderful tool for having fun and for staying organized! In this week’s episode, I’ll share five ways that you can use color to stay organized.
Color Organizing Idea #1: Color Code Personal Belongings
When I was an elementary teacher, all of my office items that were not for student use were pink. We’re talking pink pens, pink notebooks, pink binders. The rest of my classroom was orange, lime green, and gray (which was SUPER cute), so my pink stuff popped out at me. My water bottle didn’t get lost amongst the shuffle because it was pink, and my lanyard stood out because it was pink. You can apply this idea in your home with items that get mixed up. Think backpacks and school supplies, one color of socks for each family member, or all of the dog’s things being navy blue. When you color code personal belongings, you don’t have to spend time making labels because the color serves that function.
Color Organizing Idea #2: Color Code Your Calendar
I spend a lot of time with my calendar. A LOT. Between scheduling clients and organizers, personal appointments and social time, and using my calendar to budget and meal plan, it has a lot going on! My Google calendar has work color coordinated in dark tones and personal color coded in pastels. Financial is all different shades of green, with bills I need to manually pay noted in the brightest eye-catching red I could find. On the weekly fridge calendar, I put appointments in a deep purple and to-do items in a light green so that the times I’m away from home are easy for Jeff to take note of. My desk calendar is highlighted with all of my social media and marketing efforts highlighted in different colors to represent different methods of posting. I can see what I need to write about in this week’s email by looking for yellow highlight. It’s so much faster than if it were all uniform black.
Color Organizing Idea #3: Color Code Your Cleaning Supplies
I’m really loving making cleaning supplies and keeping them in nice glass bottles. I’ve fallen in love with the Grove bottles in particular, that have different color silicone cases around the bottom of the spray bottle. It’s nice to be able to have all of the cleaning supplies for each bathroom in one color for each room, so that if one floats off, I know that it doesn’t actually belong. I can also easily decipher my green glass bottle with water to mist my plants from cleaning supplies. Blue rags go in the master bath, while yellow are used for dusting. It makes it simpler to put away laundry after a major cleaning session, for sure!
Color Organizing Idea #4: Color Code Your Linens
Speaking of fabrics, I love having green linens in the guest bedroom, blue linens in the master, and neutrals throughout the rest of the house. Kitchen hand towels are green, and don’t get mixed up with our white bathroom hand towels. My towels are green, his are gray. Not only does this keep us from grabbing the wrong towel, but again, it makes folding and putting away laundry so much easier than if it were all the same!
Color Organizing Idea #5: Color Code by Season
Finally, I love Myquillin Smith, AKA “the Nester’s” idea of choosing a color palate to rotate through your home for different seasons. I’m a huge fan of pink and yellow in the spring, blue and white in the summer, red and orange in the fall, and white and green in the winter. It’s easy to swap out seasonal décor and already know what color of flowers I want to grab at the market. These little changes in color visually signify that change has come in nature, and I love taking note of the different seasons through color.
